By Katherine Kent

My name is Katherine Kent and I have been the new Young Adult Outreach Coordinator/Social Media Specialist for 2 months and it has taken about that long for me to catch my breath! Starting at JVS has been a whirlwind that included live-tweeting our annual gala, as well as a ribbon cutting to welcome the public to our new home.

My apologies, dear readers, for taking so long to introduce myself.

I come from a background of direct social service with mainly at-risk youth. That experience has given me the confidence to look at any challenge and realize that it is not impossible, especially when compared to the daunting task of caring for five teenage girls! To say patience is a virtue would be an understatement.

I have spent the last month settling into my new role and getting to know the ins and outs of CareerSolution and JVS. The wealth of knowledge that I am surrounded by is astounding and our new space is an inspiration to our team and to all who utilize our services!

If you are a regular reader of this blog, you know that my predecessor, Alyson, was a huge proponent of spending time nurturing your network on LinkedIn. It isn’t enough anymore to simply create a profile, connect with a few people and forget about LinkedIn! Even if you are not currently looking for work, it is a good idea to maintain an active presence on LinkedIn to stay fresh in the minds of your network; you never know when an opportunity may cross someone’s desk and you want the person to think of you!

5 Easy Tips for Nurturing Your Network!

  1. Spend time each day, perusing your LinkedIn home page or Newsfeed.
Start small – 10 minutes/day and work from there.
  2. Like or comment on posts
An easy way to stay fresh in someone’s mind!
  3. Share interesting content – Interesting articles, upcoming events or conferences
A great way to show your network what you are doing and to show employers and recruiters that you are staying current!
  4. Craft relevant posts
This feature is similar to a blog post and is longer than an “update”; a great way to show off your writing abilities!
  5. Develop a long term networking strategy for a few key people
Keep track of these key connections by using this great tool developed by Liz Leberman that was showcased at a Lunch & Learn event!
